The Father Christmas Letters 12/10/2009
From 1920 until 1943 J.R.R. Tolkien wrote letters, as Father Christmas, to his children. Christmas letters will go out this week. If I was on top of things, they would have gone out last week – my gifts would be wrapped and under the tree, cookies would be baked, and I would be set to coast for the rest of the month. But alas, Martha Stewart I am not. So here I sit – hot cocoa in one hand, keyboard under the other. As I sit pondering what to pen, I can’t help but think how “they” would tell you a Christmas letter should be relegated to one page of relevant information. Sounds about as exciting as a bland cover letter – no wonder Christmas letters get a bad rap. Here’s the thing: I have a friend whose yearly letter is always longer than a page – and I can’t wait to read it! Each year is different – one year a story, another multiple choice. She’s warm, she’s witty, and she keeps you entertained. Her letters are perfect examples of what Christmas letters should be: v Personal v Entertaining People would love to hear from you – they just don’t want to be bored to tears. So this year, don’t think of it as a chore with a word limit. Tell a story – tell one memorable moment from the year. If you’re a person of few words, consider a photo essay – simply print off a page with various pictures from the year. Basically, have fun writing your Christmas letter; chances are if you do so, your friends will have fun reading it as well. xoxo |
